Facts on Softball in Canada
The International Softball Federation lauched the "BackSoftball" campaign in 2007 to push for reinstatement at the 2016 Olympic Games, but the sport of softball was not chosen as one of the two sports to be included to the Olympic programme. However, the sport has garnered worldwide support and interest.
A record setting 197,139 fans attended the softball competition at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. In 2008, over 180,000 fans were in attendance. Softball Canada hosts 8 Canadian Fast Pitch Championships (Nationals) and 2 Slo-Pitch Championships rotated throughout Canada annually, involving over 140 teams and attracting close to 75,000 in-venue participants. Close to 50,000 spectators attend the Senior Men`s Canadian Softball Championships to watch world class male Fast Pitch action at its best. The Canada Cup - Women`s International Fast Pitch Event in Surrey, B.C. attracts over 110,000 spectators and participants each year. Softball Canada offers the following programs to its membership: - National Teams Program - Canadian Championships Program (Nationals) - Learn To Play - Grassroots Program - Programs for Coaches and Umpires. Canada`s National Team Athletes are young, talented and aspiring role models ranging in ages 17 years to 40 years. Television Audience Reach for Softball: 1.415 million viewers tuned into the Men`s Gold Medal Game between Canada and the USA at the 1999 Pan American Games (TSN).
900,000 viewers tuned in for the Women`s Gold Medal Game between Canada and the USA at the 1999 Pan American Games (CBC Sports). 112,000 viewers watched a round-robin game between Canada and the United States at the 2007 World Cup of Softball (TSN). 97,000 viewers watched the inaugural Men`s Slo-Pitch Border Battle between Canada and the United States in 2009 (TSN), with another 650,000 viewers tuning in on ESPN.
85,000 viewers watched the Gold and Bronze medal games from the 2009 ISF Men`s World Championship in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on a tape-delay (Sportsnet).
101,000 viewers watched the round-robin game between Canada and the United States at the 2010 World Cup of Softball (TSN)
187,000 viewers watched the second edition of the Men`s Slo-Pitch Border Battle between Canada and the United States in 2010 (TSN).
