(Ottawa, ON) Softball Canada is very pleased to release the list of players who have been selected to represent Team Canada and the Team Canada Selects at the sixth edition of the Men’s Slo-Pitch Border Battle, which will take place in Kitchener, ON from July 24-26. The athletes were selected based on their performance at the Home Run Sports Border Battle Selection Camp held in Southern Ontario last weekend.
Both Team Canada and the Team Canada Selects teams will play a series of exhibition games in Kitchener before Team Canada takes on Team USA in a one-game showdown at the Home Run Sports Border Battle on July 26th, 2014. This will mark the first time the event is held on Canadian soil.
At the inaugural event held in 2009, the United States defeated Canada by a score of 30-23 before Canada evened the series with a thrilling 30-29 victory the following year. USA dominated the third game by a score of 25-3 in 2011, and earned a 32-21 victory in 2012 before winning the fifth edition 25-10 last summer.
The list of athletes selected to participate at the Selection Camp was chosen by a panel of Slo-Pitch experts from across the country, and performance at provincial, national and international events was used as one of the major contributors to the selections. While some objective criteria were used to invite the team, it was also recognized that there was a significant subjective element. These elements included such factors as performance, experience, positional requirements, leadership and team cohesion. To be eligible to be invited, the athletes had to be members in good standing of Softball Canada as well as being Canadian citizens, or have a Permanent Resident card.
Team Canada will be led by head coach Grant Garrett (Georgetown, ON) and assistant coach Josh Zanolli (Drayton Valley, AB), while the Team Canada Selects will be led by head coach Stephane Chapdelaine (Longueuil, QC) and assistant coach Jeff Long (Amherstburg, ON).
