(Ottawa, ON) Softball Canada is saddened to announce the passing of Tom Doucette (Middle Musquodoboit, NS), a member of Softball Canada's Hall of Fame, on June 9th, 2017.

Doucette was a long-time contributor to Softball Canada’s coaching committee. Affectionately known as “Coachie”, he was involved with the Junior Men’s National Team program from 2001 until 2012 and came out of retirement to help guide the team in 2016 before leaving due to illness.

In Nova Scotia, he coached various Junior, Intermediate and Senior teams between 1980 and 1992 and coached Team Nova Scotia at four Canada Summer Games (Boy’s in 1989, 1993 and 1997; Girl’s in 2001), leading his 1993 team to a Silver medal. His coaching expertise helped Nova Scotia produce several national team athletes who have competed at the international level.

Following his Canada Games team involvement, Doucette moved on to the Junior Men’s National Team program, serving as Team Leader of the 2001 Junior Men’s National Team and later becoming an assistant coach (2002-2005) and head coach (2005 to 2012). He helped lead Canada to two bronze (2001 and 2005) and one silver (2008) medal at the WBSC Junior Men’s Softball World Championships, and helped shape the team that won another bronze in 2016.

Doucette began serving on Softball Canada’s coaching committee in 1997, developing and piloting the Introduction to Competition Stream and helping in the transition to the new NCCP. He was a Master Course Conductor since 1994, and conducted many NCCP Level I, II and III courses between 1991 and 2008.

He was inducted to the Softball Nova Scotia Hall of Fame in 2007, the Softball Canada Hall of Fame in 2011 and received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.

Softball Canada extends its heartfelt condolences to Tom’s wife Lorna and the entire Doucette family.
