(Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) The Canadian Senior Women’s National kept rolling at the VIII Pan American Softball Championship by defeating Guatemala 8-1 in six innings on the run rule. Marina Demore (Richmond, BC) settled in nicely after allowing a run and four hits in the first two innings to earn the win, and Jenny Gilbert (Saskatoon, SK) hit a base clearing double in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Guatemala put some early pressure on Team Canada with a pair of one-out singles in the top of the first, but Demore induced a ground ball for the second out and the runner at second was called for a leadoff to end the threat. In the bottom of the inning, Canada opened the scoring as leadoff hitter Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, NY) and Heather Ebert (Rosthern, SK) both singled and Gilbert followed with a single of her own to score Lever from second. Guatemala responded by scoring a run in the top of the second with two singles and an error allowing the lead runner to score. Canada retook the lead in the bottom of the frame, as Kelsey Haberl (Burnaby, BC) singled, was sacrificed to second and moved over to third on a single by Meagan Baird (Ajax, ON) before scoring on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Vicky Rumph (Mount Forest, ON).
In the top of the third, Guatemala managed a leadoff single but the two next batters grounded into fielder’s choices followed by a strikeout to leave a runner on base. Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON) also got a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning, but was retired on a double play to end the inning. Both teams were retired in order in the fourth before Canada broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth. Rumph hit a one-out single and was replaced on the bases by Larissa Franklin (Maple Ridge, BC), who stole second base and scored on a single by Lever. Hayward reached on an error followed by a single on the infield by Ebert to load the bases before Gilbert brought everyone home with a double to left field. Kelsey Haberl singled to right field to score Gilbert and give Canada a commanding 7-1 lead. The following inning, Rumph hit a one-out double and moved up to third on a ground out to second base before scoring on a single by Hayward to end the game.
