2013panamchamp.png(Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) The Canadian Senior Women’s National Team dropped a 4-0 decision to the Dominican Republic in the preliminary round of the VIII Pan American Championship in Puerto Rico. Team Canada outhit the Dominican Republic 4-3, but allowed three runs in the top of the third inning on five walks and a hit by pitch, and was unable to capitalize on their chances offensively.

After two strikeouts to begin the game, the Dominican Republic put a runner on base with a walk followed by a double to score the first run. In the bottom of the second, Erika Polidori (Brantford, ON) reached on an error and stole second base, but Canada was unable to bring her in to score. In the top of the third, the first two batters walked followed by two strikeouts, but another walk loaded the bases before a wild pitch pushed another run across for the Dominican Republic. Another walk loaded the bases again, followed by a walk and a hit by pitch to give the Dominican Republic a 4-0 lead.

Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON) hit a two-out triple in the bottom of the third, but the next hitter grounded out to leave her stranded. Team Canada had its best chance to score in the fourth, as they loaded the bases with two outs on two walks and a single by Sara Hopwood (Surrey, BC) but a pop out to third base ended the threat. The Dominican Republic managed a leadoff single in the top of the fifth, but a fielder’s choice and a double play got Canada out of the inning. In the bottom of the frame, Meagan Baird (Ajax, ON) also hit a leadoff single, but was later retired on a fielder’s choice. Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, NY) proceeded to steal second base, but was left stranded after a ground out.

Canada got another leadoff single by Jenny Gilbert (Saskatoon, SK) in the bottom of the sixth, but was quickly retired on a double play as the Dominican Republic defence left the Canadians off the scoreboard once again. The red and white went down in order in the seventh as the Dominican Republic took the win.

Sara Plourde (Fredericton, NB) took the loss for Canada, allowing four runs on only one hit but issued six walks, with seven strikeouts in two and two third innings. Jenna Caira (Toronto, ON) pitched an inning and a third of perfect relief with two strikeouts, with Marina Demore (Richmond, BC) allowing two hits over the final three innings. Hayward, Baird, Gilbert and Hopwood registered Canada’s hits.
