US World Cup - Game 5
Sunday, July 24, 2011(Oklahoma City, OK) After a big win against Team USA on Saturday, the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team had a chance to secure a birth in Monday night’s Championship game with a win against Australia on Sunday. However, the Aussies had other things in mind, as they defeated Canada 8-3, which means the two teams will battle once again for the Bronze medal at the US World Cup of Softball on Monday (5:00pm EDT). The United States (4-1) will take on Japan (4-1) in the Championship game (9:00pm EDT).
After Australia went down in order in the top of the first, Canada struck first in the bottom of the inning. Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) hit an infield single to second base followed by another infield single by Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON). The runners were sacrificed to second and third by Jenn Yee (North Delta, BC), and Kelsey Haberl (Burnaby, BC) later hit a two-out RBI single to center field to bring Matthews in to score. Team Canada would add another run in the bottom of the second when Megan Timpf (Port Dover, ON) led off with a single, stole second base, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Danielle Lopez (Barrie, ON).
In the third, Australia cut the lead to 2-1 when Stacey McManus singled, stole second, was sacrificed to third and scored on a single off Canadian pitcher Sarah Phillips’ (Mississauga, ON) glove. Canada would get that run right back in the bottom of the inning, as Jenn Yee forced a leadoff walk, moved to second on an infield single by Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph, ON) and to third on a fielder’s choice. Joey Lye (Toronto, ON) then hit a single through the left side of the infield to push Yee to the plate, giving Canada a 3-1 lead after three innings of play.
Australia shifted the momentum in their favour in the top of the fourth. After back-to-back singles to start the inning, one of the runners scored on a bad throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Carmelle Sorensen then hit an RBI single to third base, and Stacey McManus hit a deep sacrifice fly to score another run as Australia took a 4-3 lead. The Aussies kept the pressure on the following inning, adding two more runs on a two-out single by Jade Wall.
After Australia added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 8-3, Canada loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Melanie Matthews and walks to Victoria Hayward and Jenn Yee, but the next two batters were not able to score them as Canada fell to Australia.
After pitching three solid innings to start the game, Sarah Phillips took the loss for Canada, allowing six runs – two earned – on eight hits in four and two thirds innings. Jocelyn Cater (Delta, BC) pitched two innings of relief, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. Melanie Matthews and Joey Lye each had two singles for Canada, while Kaleigh Rafter, Victoria Hayward, Kelsey Haberl and Megan Timpf each added one.
Canada (3-2) will play Australia (3-2) once again for the Bronze medal at 5:00pm EDT on Monday.
