The Canadian Junior Women's National Team opened their ISF Pan American Qualifier schedule in Bogota with an 11-6 exhibition game win over the host Colombians. Canada built a 7-0 second inning advantage and had an 11-0 lead heading in to the bottom of the seventh and gave up six runs in a sloppy inning before they finally got the last out.
Canada used five pitchers in the game with Jocelyn Cater (Maple Ridge, BC) starting and picking up the win. Natalie Becker (Waterloo, ON), Jacquie Omichinski (Abbbotsford, BC), Shanna Wilson (Peterborough, ON) and Karissa Hovinga (La Vista, Nebraska) followed in the pitcher's circle. The Canadian pitching staff only gave up four hits and struck out 11, allowing three earned runs.
Canada scored three runs in the first inning highlighted by Katelyn Bedwell’s (Surrey, BC) RBI single after singles by Jennifer Gilbert (Mckinney, Texas) and Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, California). Canada added four in the second on two hits, a Gilbert triple and a single by Bedwell. Tessa Loewen (Abbotsford, BC) added a single run in the third. After working a walk, she scored on a fielder's choice by Hayward.
In the sixth, Corinne Brookhuis (Toronto, ON) singled and scored on a Omichinski double to centre field, who then scored on a Brigitte Aizprua (Terebonne, QC) single. Canada’s final run came after an error and singles by Brookhuis and Bedwell in the seventh.
In the Colombian seventh, Canada gave up six runs with some sloppy play as they made three errors and gave up three hits but managed to stem the tide as Karissa Hovinga came in to get the final out with a strike out.
Bedwell led the way with three hits and two RBI’s. Omichinski, Gilbert and Brookhuis had two hits each with singles to Hayward, Natasha Szlapetis (Brampton, ON) and Brigitte Aizprua.
Canada plays the USA tomorrow at 11:00am (local time) in another exhibition game.
