Pan Am Championship - Day 6Wednesday, August 05, 2009 (Maracay, Venezuela) The Canadian Senior Womens National Team got the day off to a good start by defeating Argentina 7-0 to complete the game that had been postponed last Friday, but then came out on the losing end of a 1-0 pitchers duel against the hosts from Venezuela. The game against Venezuela was delayed by 3 ½ hours due to rain. The morning game against Argentina began where it left off in the top of the fourth inning, with Argentina batting with two runners on base and two outs. Jenna Caira (Toronto, ON) relieved Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) at this point and pitched 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Canada scored two runs in the fourth to push the score to 6-0 as Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, New York) and Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) each singled and a third single by Jenn Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) scored both runners. In the sixth, Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, California) reached on an error and scored on single by Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) to end the game on the run rule with Canada winning 7-0. In game two, monsoon rains delayed the start of the game for 3 ½ hours, and when the game finally got underway around 11:00pm, a pitching duel ensued between Danielle Lawrie and Venezuelan starter Mariangee Bogado. Lawrie allowed only two hits and had six strikeouts while Bogado allowed three hits with six strikeouts. The only run of the game came in the fifth inning, as the leadoff batter for Venezuela was hit by a pitch and the second batter reached on a fielders choice. With runners on first and third, a Canadian error scored the runner from third to make the final score Venezuela 1, Canada 0. The loss puts Canada in second place in their division with a 7-1 record while Venezuela moved into first at 8-0. Canada will play its final round-robin game today against Jamaica (1-7) at 2:00pm EDT. The playoff round will begin on Friday as Canada will likely play the first place team in the A division. The United States are leading that division at 8-0 without allowing a run to score (96 runs for, 0 against). -SC- For more information, please contact: Gilles LeBlanc |
