Canada Cup - Game 3Tuesday, July 15, 2008 Canada defeats Assault 10-0 in third game of Canada Cup On the offensive side, Canada put forth a well rounded effort with eight different players collecting hits in each of the four innings of the night. In front of her hometown crowd, Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) ignited the offense in the top of the first inning with a lead-off double hit to leftfield, coming around to score on a passed ball. After Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph, ON) and Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) had both singled in the second inning, it was Matthews again who hit a long three-run homerun to deep left-center field. It was Rafters turn to drive in some runs of her own in the third, with a homerun into the right field bleachers that drove in Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON), who had doubled earlier in the frame. In the fourth and final inning, Noémie Marin (Acton-Vale, QC) led off with a walk followed by a single by Megan Timpf (Port Dover, ON). Jennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) then singled to score Marin, while Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) singled to score Timpf. The game closed out with another hit by Rafter, on which both Salling and Lawrick registered runs. On the night, Rafter finished the game three-for-three with four RBIs and Matthews also collected three RBIs. The game was without a doubt a team effort, as six other Canadian players added hits to the tally. In the circle, Robin Mackin (Newmarket, ON) had a strong performance, throwing all four innings of the game and giving up just four hits, while striking out seven Assault hitters. - Wendy Dobbin (Assistant Coach) - -SC- |
