Officials

As with any competition, there needs to be an unbiased body to pass judgment on every aspect of the game. Softball Canada has worked very hard with Umpires across Canada to ensure that young boys and girls, as well and Men and women have the best officiating of any sport.

All umpires that have agreed to participate in the 2012 Canadian Junior Men`s Fastball Championships have achieved their Level 4 On-field Certification in Umpiring and have officiated in at least 2 previous Canadian Championships.

Umpires are assigned by their provinces/territories. Each area has the right to nominate one official to the Championship.  After the initial process, Softball Canada then approaches the Provinces by region and asks the Umpire In Chief (UIC) of those provinces to nominate other officials to fill out the crew.  Then the rest of the country is asked to fill in any remaining gaps in crew numbers.  All officials coming to the Championship will have achieved their Level 4 or Level 5 umpiring certification.

One other important note. The last time I was involved, I recall that travel expenses for the umpires are paid by the home province of the official, however no game fee is paid for the games worked. They receive a room that is shared with another official and a small per diem. Time away from their regular lives is completely incurred by the umpires. Many use their vacation time to help with these events. This is very generous and their efforts should be highly recognized.

Thank and Umpire today! Without their help, we have no sport!
