Santo Domingo, D.R. – Team Canada improved its record to 4-0 following a 9-0 win over Brazil in five innings at the IX Pan American Women’s Softball Championship. Sara Plourde (Baker Lake, N.B.) picked up the win by only allowing two hits, while Carey-Leigh Vyse (Ohsweken, Ont.) drove in four runs including a three-run homerun.

In the second inning, Canada got a leadoff single by Holly Speers (Surrey, B.C.) followed by a sacrifice bunt by Victoria Hayward (Toronto, Ont.) that was thrown away at first to put runners on second and third. However, the next three batters were retired as Brazil was able to get out of the inning unscathed.

In the third, Larissa Franklin (Maple Ridge, B.C.) and Sarah Chow (Victoria, B.C.) both singled before Jenn Salling (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) hit an RBI double to score Franklin. Chow scored on an RBI groundout by Speers followed by a hit by pitch to Hayward before Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph, Ont.) and Vyse each hit run-scoring singles, and Rafter later crossed the plate on a passed ball to give Canada a 5-0 lead. The following inning, Canada added four runs to its lead after the first two batters flied out. Speers got things started with a walk followed by a single by Hayward and an RBI single by Rafter before Vyse launched a three-run homerun to round out the scoring.

Box Score: Canada 9 vs. Brazil 0

Plourde sat Brazil down in order in the second, fourth and fifth innings and struck out six in the five inning shutout win. Vyse drove in four runs on two hits with Rafter contributing a pair of RBI singles. Salling and Speers each had a hit and an RBI, while Chow, Hayward and Franklin each chipped in with a hit.

Canada (4-0) will play its next game against Argentina (3-2) at 8:30am EDT on Tuesday.
